COUNTY REPUBLICAN & PRESS (Neillsville, Wis.) 03/04/1920 Short, John (4 JUN
1850 - 24 Feb 1920) John Short, one of
the oldest settlers of the town of Washburn, Clark County, Wis. and
a Clark County pioneer, died at his home in that town Feb. 24,
1920. He was born in
Jefferson Co., Wis., Jun 4, 1850, being the son of James and Betsy
Short. He came to Clark County about 48 years ago and soon after
secured land in the town of Washburn, which was his home until his
death. On May 6, 1874 he was married to Miss Jennie McGinnis, who
preceded him in death 9 years ago. Of his six brothers and three
sisters, only one of the family remains, Andrew Short, who lived
near by in the town of Washburn, and who was with him in his last
illness nearly all the time, helping care for him in every way
possible. He left two sons, Edward F. Short, living on his farm in
Washburn, and Arthur Short, living on the home farm; and two
daughters, Mrs. F. H. Wright of Yiseta, Texas, and Mrs. O. A.
Toptine of Rena Hill, Wyo. In his vicinity
are many other more distant relatives, and with his long residence
there he had come to be looked upon as part of almost every home in
the community. Mr. Short was a man who had no enemies. The world
had not brought him riches, but he had a spirit of cheerfulness
which riches alone cannot give. He came into a wilderness where
hard toil and much of it was needed, and he gave to its development
all the best years of his life. Of him, and such as him, May it
truly be said: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant, enter
thou into the joy of thy Lord." Funeral services
were held at the home Friday forenoon, Rev. Wilson Mallory of
Granton officiating. Burial took place in Neillsville Cemetery. The family wishes
to express their appreciation and thanks to the neighbors and
friends who so freely gave their help during the sickness and gave
their full-hearted sympathy in the time of his death and
burial. © Every submission is protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
